The Metropolitan State University of Denver Foundation, Inc. is recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code and classified as a public charity as described in Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). The Foundation is a separate legal entity from Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The MSU Denver Foundation is audited annually at the end of its June 30 fiscal year. In accordance with the rules of the State of Colorado, the Office of the State Auditor approves the independent auditing firm annually. Audited financial statements for the most recent three years are available below.
All 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporations are required to submit an annual informational tax return to the Internal Revenue Service that outlines revenues, changes in net assets, operational expenses and information relating to audited financial statements.
