OVERVIEW
The United States is facing an increasing vulnerability of a wide range of risks stemming from cyber-attacks, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Such attacks have caused the loss and corruption of valuable digital information in cyberspace, may it be in transit or stored. DHS further points out that “of growing concern is the cyber threat to critical infrastructure, which is increasingly subject to sophisticated cyber intrusions that pose new risks.
CyberSeek, a non-profit information security advocacy group, states that there is a dangerous shortage of cybersecurity professionals in the United States. Employers are struggling to fill thousands of cyber-security related roles. On average, cybersecurity roles take 21% longer to fill than other IT jobs.
Cyber operations involve a complex interplay between technology and human behavior. To meet the sociotechnical needs from industry, MSU Denver has taken a unique approach by combining the Departments of Criminal Justice & Criminology (CJC), Computer Information Systems & Business Analytics (CIS & BA), and Computer Sciences (CS) to jointly create a multidisciplinary Master of Science in Cybersecurity degree program.
The graduate program combines advanced computer/information system knowledge of combating cybercrime, analytical skills to analyze and manage cyber threats and security, the understanding of human factors in cyber operations, as well as the adaptation of laws to create policies to investigate, prosecute, and to punish cybercriminals.
Mission Statement and Goals
The mission of the Master of Science in Cybersecurity (CYBM) program is to provide students with in-depth knowledge as well as practical skills in both policy and analysis of computer and network security, privacy, computer forensics, and the investigation, prosecution, and punishment of cybercrime. The CYBM program:
- Offers a multidisciplinary curriculum that combines the areas of computer science, computer information systems, cyber laws and policies, with an understanding of cyber-crimes and criminals;
- Enables students with either a technical or non-technical undergraduate field of study to obtain a graduate degree in cybersecurity;
- Prepares students to enter management or technical positions at all levels in the field of cybersecurity, and
- Provides students with leadership skills and an ability to work well in a team-based work environment.

The Master of Science in Cybersecurity at Metropolitan State University of Denver is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) developed the National Cybersecurity Workplace Framework, and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) developed Industry Competency Model. The M.S. in Cybersecurity competencies use the above framework and model as guides.

Nationwide, the demand for positions in cybersecurity continues to grow. More than 200,000 cybersecurity jobs are unfilled in public and private sectors, and postings are up 74 percent over the last five years. The demand is expected to remain high as the need for cybersecurity professionals has grown three times as fast as traditional IT jobs. If you’re a veteran or work in law enforcement even better. These employment backgrounds and the security clearances that accompany them are particularly attractive for jobs relative to cybersecurity.

The CYBM program must approve any deviation from the academic plan of study*. Most of our courses have prerequisites; students who do not enroll in all classes every semester will take longer to complete the program as courses are only offered once per year and are sequential.

- A computer with a reliable internet connection—high-speed internet, such as DSL or cable, is strongly recommended.
- At least one compatible internet browser with updated plug-ins. Requirements for computer operating systems, browsers, and plug-ins can be found on the Canvas support page regarding Browser and Computer Requirements for Canvas
- Adobe Acrobat Reader, version X or higher. To ensure you can access all PDF files, download the latest version of Adobe Reader
- Word Processing Software: Microsoft Word (version 2013 or higher), WordPad, or OpenOffice software is recommended.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Yes! We have students in our program from a variety of backgrounds; having a cybersecurity, computer science or computer information systems background is definitely helpful as our program can be quite technical, but we offer introductory classes that can help bridge the gap somewhat if you feel that you need to gain more knowledge (i.e. CSS 2751 Principles of Cybersecurity).
The CYBM program consists of 36 credits.
Internships are optional and the credits will not count towards the required 36 credits for the CYBM program. Students cannot substitute any other required courses with the internship. To receive academic credit for an internship (CYBM 6000) students must have 24 completed credit hours and permission of faculty.
CYBM 6000 Internship in Cybersecurity Course Description: Students in this course will demonstrate the skills learned at Metropolitan State University of Denver with experience working in the field of cybersecurity. Students will gain hands-on experience related to their field of study by integrating classroom learning with the acquisition of meaningful knowledge in an applied work setting. Through direct coordination, performance and formulation, students gain an understanding of an assigned agency’s work, mission, and client, and how these potentially relate to their individual academic study, and the agency’s position in the broader industry or field. Students will produce a critical evaluation on their internship experience demonstrating how they have addressed specific learning goals.
Students in the CYBM program must complete the degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Any student falling below a 3.0 average in any given term will be placed on academic probation. Students who fail to raise their GPA to 3.0 or above after 9 credit hours will be dismissed from the CYBM program.
No grade lower than a “C” will count toward the degree. Students receiving a “D” or below will be required to repeat the course.

Students may transfer up to 6 graduate-level credits into the CYBM program upon approval by the Cybersecurity Admissions Review Committee. For more information about this process, please contact the Cybersecurity Program Manager.
We offer flexible evening class options (asynchronous online, synchronous online, hybrid in person) to complete the Master of Science in Cybersecurity degree. Most classes are held in the evening, after 5 p.m.
Yes, we have full-time and part-time options. Do keep in mind that classes are only offered once a year, so the part-time option means it will take you much longer to complete the program. In addition, most classes have prerequisites and are sequential in nature. For part-time enrollment, please contact the Cybersecurity Program Manager for more information.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, the cost is $500.00 per credit hour (resident) and $725.00 per credit hour (non-resident) for a total of 36 credits (plus fees).

Yes, students enrolled in at least 6 credits per semester may qualify for financial aid. We also have a very limited number of scholarships available to full-time students (enrolled in 9 credit hours).
SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID
GENERAL & ACADEMIC POLICIES
CYBM program students should familiarize themselves with the 2024-2025 Academic Catalog for a comprehensive list of University policies.
Students who have not been in attendance for three consecutive semesters including summer must reapply to the CYBM program. Students seeking readmission must be in good academic standing.
CYBM program students who are eligible for readmission should submit the Readmission after Leave of Absence form and the graduate application.
- Students who are readmitted into the CYBM program will be held to the policies and curriculum of the later term in which they officially restart the CYBM program.
- An approved readmit application is valid for one academic year (including summer) from the readmit semester.
- Students who are not in good academic standing are not eligible for the readmit application process and must fully apply to the CYBM program.
The CYBM program does not offer any credits from learning gained through life experience toward the CYBM degree.
The CYBM program does not provide an option to test out of any coursework at the graduate level.
Students must complete the Master of Science in Cybersecurity degree within six calendar years from the term they initially enroll. Students should check the Academic Catalog and specific program section of the catalog to determine specific degree requirements.
No more than six (6) graduate-level transfer credits (semester hours or equivalent) will be accepted for the CYBM program. The credits must have been completed no longer than six years prior to the admission term and must be from a regionally accredited, U.S. institution or equivalent.
The CYBM program has discretion over the acceptance of transfer courses. A minimum grade of “B” is required for each transfer course. Applicants should check the CYBM program website and contact the Cybersecurity Program Manger regarding potential transfer of credits.
Forms of electronic communication have become in fact the means of official communication to students, faculty and staff within MSU Denver. This policy acknowledges this fact and formally makes electronic communication an official means of communication for the University.
Students are expected to attend all sessions of courses for which they are registered. Each instructor determines when a student’s absences have reached a point at which they jeopardize success in a course. When absences become excessive, the student may receive a failing grade for the course. If students anticipate a prolonged absence, they should contact their instructors.
Students may enroll in no more than nine (9) credits per semester for fall, spring, or summer semesters without the approval of all the involved departments.
The CYBM program does not allow any course to count toward both a master’s and bachelor’s degree.
Only students who are formally accepted into the CYBM program or non-degree-seeking status may register for any CYBM graduate courses.
The University residency requirement for master’s programs is the total number of semester hours required for the program minus nine (9).

All CYBM coursework, including any electives, must be completed and passed in the required sequential order as listed in the Master of Science in the Cybersecurity Program Details and Curriculum document. These courses are only offered once a year. Students must maintain continuous enrollment. Students who fall out of sequence are no longer in good academic standing and must seek to advise to continue in the program. A plan of completion will be determined in advising and the revised plan could delay graduation a year or more. Students who fall out of sequence and do not seek to advise for a new plan of completion will receive an automatic performance review.
All CYBM students must successfully complete all CYBM courses (totaling 36 credit hours) including CYBM 6001 Cybersecurity Capstone and complete the senior project.
A review of a candidate’s plan of study and progress must be conducted as soon as all the minimum requirements have been met and no later than the first day of the term in which the student expects to complete the degree. Minimum requirements for the review include completion of any provisional admission requirements, an approved plan of study that will lead to meeting the degree requirements, posting of any transfer work to the student’s record, and a grade point average of “B” or better in all work completed to that point. Successful completion of the review and approval by the appropriate faculty advisors, or student services office and the Office of Graduate Studies constitutes Advancement to Candidacy.
The CYBM program does not grant plus and minus grades. Students should refer to the Academic Policies and Procedures section of the Graduate Catalog for a listing of all grades and notations including incompletes and withdrawals.
In addition to adhering to the University requirement for Incomplete eligibility, CYBM students who have any outstanding incompletes at the start of the following semester will receive an automatic performance review which may result in an altered academic plan.

2025 CYBM APPLICATION INFORMATION
Important Application Dates
Our Fall 2025 application will open on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Priority deadline is April 1, 2025.
After the April 1st deadline, applicants who do not have a degree and/or background in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology or related field will be accepted until May 1.
For applicants who do have a degree and/or background in these areas, we will review the applications case-by-case from May 1 until July 15, 2025 as space is available.
- Be advised, the application processing time may take up to 6 – 8 weeks from the date of submitting a complete application.
- International applications are not accepted for the Fall 2025 admission cycle.
- The CYBM program at MSU Denver is Fall-start only.
Admission to the CYBM Program
To be eligible for admission to the CYBM program, candidates must:
- Submit graduate application and application fee
- Submit a curriculum vitae or resume
- Hold a baccalaureate from an accredited college or university.
- Submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. A minimum undergraduate GPA 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 is required
All submitted documentation will be reviewed by the CYBM Admission Committee for a final decision.
